Finding Refuge was started in 2010 by a group of students from Semester at Sea, after an inspiring visit to the nonprofit City of Refuge in Ghana. The City of Refuge is an organization that rescues child slaves from the Lake Volta region. The faces and stories of the children at the City of Refuge moved us to create Finding Refuge, a 501c3,which exists to support City of Refuge in their quest to put an end to child slavery in Ghana. In the words of City of Refuge's logo, we exist to motivate, educate, and liberate.
Ultimately, we wish to LIBERATE all the children enslaved on Lake Volta. Upon rescuing the children from Lake Volta, it is City of Refuge's ultimate goal to reunite the children with their family. Once a child is rescued the City of Refuge will support the mother with one years rent, and pay for the schooling of her kids for as long as they wish to be enrolled. If reunification of the family is impossible, the child finds a home at City of Refuge's Freedom Center, where they are given back the childhood they were so wrongfully robbed.
