In its southeast corner, the refuge conjoins with North Carolina Great Dismal Swamp State Park, a much smaller tract that is open to visitors and the public. The refuge is surrounded on all sides by state highways and roads that, in the main, run right alongside its boundaries while farm fields and wooded tracts generally stand across those roads, opposite the morass. The refuge is accessible today by any of a series of monitored gates along its western and southern boundaries. Also, small boats can access Lake Drummond by way of the Feeder Ditch, an east–west-running canal that connects Lake Drummond with the Dismal Swamp Canal.
2 But Lake Drummond is the only permanent body of water in the swamp, and as such it has been a draw for human beings for millennia (figure 9). Since 1763, canals have been excavated across the Great Dismal and have had, collectively, great impacts on hydrological, geological, and biological systems. Pre–Civil War canals certainly had incredible impacts on natural processes in the morass, especially, perhaps, the Dismal Swamp Canal that was cut through Figure 9.
