This quantity includes the lawsuits of the 5th foreign Symposium on Acoustical Holograhy and Imaging, held in Palo Alto, California, on July 18-20, 1973. The name of this Symposium differed from that of the former 4 by means of the addition of the note "Imaging," reflecting a rise in emphasis on nonholographic equipment of acoustical visualization. For comfort, no switch has been made within the name of this released sequence. The forty two Symposium papers hide a variety of theoreti cal and utilized issues, and successfully outline the state-of the-art during this speedily constructing box. a lot of them relate to purposes of acoustic visualization in such various fields as nondestructive checking out, clinical prognosis, microscopy, underwater viewing, and seismic mapping. The papers offered on the Symposium have been chosen with significant the aid of this system Committee. The Editor needs to thank the subsequent individuals for serving as individuals of this committee: P. Alais, college of Paris, France; B. A. Auld, Stanford college; D. R. Holbrooke, kid's health facility of San Francisco; A. Korpel, Zenith Radio company; J. L. Kreuzer, Perkin Elmer company; A. F. Metherell, Actron Industries, Inc.; R. ok. Mueller, Bendix learn Laboratories; B. Saltzer, u.S. Naval lower than sea study and improvement middle; F. L. Thurstone, Duke collage; and G. Wade, college of California, Santa Barbara.

The convention concerned about the habit of asset marketplace costs, an issue of accelerating curiosity to either the preferred press and to educational journals because the bull marketplace of the Eighties persisted.

Molecular Chaperones

At present one of many preferred themes in biochemistry, the idea that of molecular chaperones has challenged the paradigm of protein self-assembly. Key figures in lots of disciplines evaluate all features of molecular chaperones during this quantity, which arises from a Royal Society dialogue assembly. assessment chapters talk about the importance of chaperones in biochemistry, molecular genetics and telephone biology.

RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ACOUSTICAL HOLOGRAM When the optical hologram is reconstructed the image of the vibrating surface will be visible with the intensity of the surface being linearly related to the surface vibration (assuming that the illuminating beam intensity is constant across the surface).

KEYANI, J. LANDRY, AND G. WADE on one side (Figure 6). The container is filled with castor oil which has the same acoustic impedance as water but its absorption coefficient is approximately two orders of magnitude larger than that of water. Since the acoustic impedance of the polyethylene membrane is larger than that of water the absorber is rotated in such a way that it is not exactly parallel with the transducer. A comparison of the images shown in Figure 4 indicates that the best low-frequency image is obtained when the oil absorber is in place.

And f3 = 10°. Hence, sin cp = l. 05. Heretofore, acoustic holograms have only been useful to the extent that optical reconstruction has been possible. Here we emphasize that the interferometric aspects of acoustic holography may also be useful since quantitative information is extractable without optical reconstruction. REFERENCES l) A. Karpel, L.
