At the same time, the amount of construction work was still quite large because of the significant increase in drilling volume. Drillers faced the necessity of saving time and materials when constructing access roads and drilling locations especially in shallow sea waters, peat bogs, and inland bodies of water. To enable drilling in such areas, drillers often built artificial islands by making gravel and sand fills, which involved a large amount of capital. The industry needed alternative methods for constructing drilling pads based on a pinpoint blasting technique and use of natural materials.
For these reasons, drillers commenced directional well technology as early as 1931 and 1932 using the rotary drilling method with whipstocks. Because of known drawbacks to this method, drillers attempted to run turbodrills as soon as they became available. From 1939 through 1941, they ran turbodrills while drilling certain intervals in several wells, but use of the turbodrilling method was complicated due to lack of required drilling equipment at that time (see Chapter 2).
