Daily, although some wineries have longer or shorter hours, and it is always a good idea to call ahead to confirm opening times, especially early in the week (Monday and Tuesday particularly). Groups larger than six people should always call ahead to be sure the winemakers can accommodate them. Many of the best small wineries are open by appointment only. You should not feel in the least bit shy about making the call. If a winemaker requires advance notice, it just means that he or she wants to be sure the tasting room is staffed that afternoon, and it is usually a sign that the person behind the bar will be the same person who goes out pruning the vines other days of the week.
This means that vineyard management on the property is high-tech. These steep hillside vineyards exhibit a variety of microclimates on the estate, which has been divided into thirty micro blocks, each with different soil depths and water needs taken care of by a state-of-the-art wireless irrigation system, a vineyard sensory mesh network, and weather stations. There are thoughts of giving each plant in the vineyard its own radio-controlled identification tag. This is where science meets winemaking at its most ingenious.
