The choice of interval should be related to knowledge of the incidence rate of new lesions; in deciding on an interval, we must compromise between, on the one hand, re-examinationing often enough to ensure that a new lesion arising since the previous test has not advanced too far, and on the other hand, not overburdening the patient or the medical facilities. Little attention has been paid to this problem beyond determining age limits, as was done for cervical cytology; and further investigation is required.
