In 1850, the Edinburgh Mechanics’ Institute had the largest membership of any for the whole of Britain, with 2,035. The Leeds Mechanics’ Institute was second with 1,852, Huddersfield Mechanics’ Institute tenth and Barnsley Mechanics’ Institute 119th, out of 734. Table 1 shows Barnsley Mechanics’ Institute’s position in relation to membership for the whole country in 1851. In the Yorkshire Union of Mechanics’ Institutes, Barnsley was ranked seventh largest out of 148 in 1851 (see Table 2).
