There is a significant decline in numbers of books read by 14-year-old boys. • Children at the ages of 10, 12 and 14 read a wide range of books. They are highly eclectic in their reading habits. • Strongly plotted ‘adventure’ stories are very popular across the ages. • There is a declining interest in school-, animal- and sports-related stories and in books within the ‘comedy’ category after the age of 10. • A minority taste for science fiction, horror and ghost stories, war- and spy-related books, and crime and detection is sustained fairly consistently across the age range.
The only author to be named a favourite solely by boys was Michael Hardcastle (who writes football stories), although Brian Jacques, J. R. R. Tolkien, Grant Naylor (the Red Dwarf series), Douglas Adams and Franklin Dixon (the Hardy Boys series) were named predominantly by boys. It is interesting to note which authors were more or less equally named by both sexes: Sue Townsend, C. S. Lewis, Robin Jarvis, Charles Dickens and James Herbert. In terms of age, only C. S. Lewis, Michael Hardcastle, Robin Jarvis and Carolyn Keene were named roughly equally across the three age groups.
There are 20 series mentioned here, more than in any of the lists for boys. Obvious too is an interest in animals, particularly horses, and animal stories. It seems too that the obvious preference of older girls for fiction centred on romance, relationships and growing up is being established at this age, as evidenced by the popularity of the Babysitter and Sweet Valley series, and the presence of titles such as Little Women, Oliver Twist, My 38 Favourite books Girl, The Secret Garden, Are You There God?
