They were willing to make enormous sacrifices in order to reach their goals, and all of them bounced back from hardships. Most cultures have at one time or another taught women that their place is in the home, that they are not smart enough to be physicians, and that it is not proper for women to examine men. There has also been discrimination based upon race or class. But the women in this book broke the rules. Each is a “first” — the first to do something no woman had done before in the field of medicine.
They began to notice words all around them. Six months after the opening, word had spread around the world about these poorly clothed, dirty children who had come to life. Maria said they had revealed their true souls. More “children’s houses” opened in Italy. Maria spoke publicly about how children learn, and her ideas spread to other countries, such as Canada, the United States, Australia, England, China, Spain and Holland. Italy and Switzerland started to use her approach in every school. In 1909, she wrote a book called The Montessori Method, and within three years it had been translated into twenty languages.
Many children died of infection or other complications. Lucille and Piero came to understand that canine teeth were thought of as “evil” teeth. The Acoli people believed that if those teeth were allowed to grow in, the cattle would die and the rains would not come. Lucille and Piero tried to explain to the parents the connection between this custom and the deaths of their children, but with limited success. Lucille remembered her childhood dream of doctoring in Asia, and imagined St. Mary’s growing into a large modern hospital with a surgical unit and African doctors.
