Demand is derived from consumer markets, and fluctuates more as a result. If consumers are not buying, firms run their stocks down and so they buy less than usual; when demand picks up, they not only have to supply consumers, but they also build stocks again, so they buy even more than usual. Buying to specific requirements: industrial buyers often work to a detailed specification of what the firm needs, and cannot be persuaded other wise: for example, if a buyer is sourcing components for a machine, they will have to fit with other components.

Research comes from two main sources: secondary research and primary research. Secondary research comes from published sources, and has usually been collected for some other purpose: primary research is original research, carried out for a specific decision-making purpose. If you think of secondary research as second-hand research, it makes it easier to remember which is which. Secondary research should always be done first, because there is no point in re-inventing the wheel: if someone has already researched something relevant to the topic, it is cheaper, quicker and easier to read their research than to carry out your own.
