A similar thing is true for the lymph flow rate (LFR): with an increase of the lymphatic preload, the LFR can also rise only to a certain maximum value. This maximum value is called the transport capacity of the lymphatic system. The distinction between the LFR at rest and the transport capacity is called the functional reserve of the lymphatic system. ❸ Only a limited amount of lymph can pass through the lymphatic system in a given time (limited capacity). This lymph output cannot be surpassed even with full activation of the lymphangion motor function.
At the end of the filling phase, when the interstitium is emptied, the lymph pressure in the initial lymph vessel is higher than the tissue pressure.
