Cell phones, wireless PDAs, and pagers are left on all day and stay with the user. Cell phones, in particular, are regarded as personal accessories like pens or watches and not shared with other users. They become personalised with snap-on covers, ringing tones, and boot-up icons. PDAs usurp the traditional functions of the paper schedule, address book, and notebook, their users coming quickly to rely on them as the repository of all their most important personal information. Personalisation of services is an important theme in mobile commerce, both from the point of view of the user’s ability to customise a service to her own preferences and from the point of view of the service provider’s ability to recognise a user and deliver relevant content to her.

Unattended mobile systems fixed in trucks, trains, ships, and planes can communicate with logistics systems to determine routes, loads, and delivery times. The IT systems world view will be beneficial in achieving such applications. However, when we switch to the B2C part of the model, our ITderived viewpoint becomes a hindrance. We can no longer assume that “business-to-consumer” is the natural orientation of the commercial vector. The mobile channel is inhabited by active users who grasp atomic services at the time and place of need and who resist intrusion from businesses that seek to monopolise their choices or attention.

Since minicabs are cheaper than black cabs, the ability to book a minicab from any location to any other at a prearranged price is an attractive mobile commerce service. Sessami is playing a role somewhat like that of the official licensor. By recommending a cab firm, and ultimately by facilitating a transaction with that firm, it is implying a guarantee of some level of competence and value. The licence is a commercial one rather than one blessed by a regulatory authority. For companies like Sessami, success in making recommendations that ring true and choosing partners that deliver will determine their brand value.
