Die gelungene Kombination aus Science-fiction und Klamauk scheint den Zeitgeschmack voll getroffen zu haben, und auch nachdem in den letzten Jahren eine Menge ähnlicher Bücher auf den Markt geworfen wurden, verteidigt der Anhalter seine Vormachtstellung.
Während der Großteil der Menschheit von dem Eintreffen einer außerirdischen Bautruppe ziemlich überrascht wird -- und für einen kurzen second die Überraschung in Panik umschlägt als klar wird, daß die Erde einer geplanten Hyperraum-Autobahn im Wege steht und daher vernichtet werden muß -- gelingt es zumindest dem seit 15 Jahren auf der Erde gestrandeten Außerirdischen Ford Prefect und seinem durch und durch irdischen Freund Arthur Dent -- der bis vor kurzem noch genügend andere Probleme hatte -- mit ihrem Multifunktionshandtuch auf sich aufmerksam zu machen und als Anhalter mitgenommen zu werden.
Im weiteren Verlauf treffen sie auf den Präsidenten der Galaxis, Zaphod Beeblebrox, der nach dem Diebstahl eines Raumschiff-Prototyps auf der Flucht vor der gesamten galaktischen Polizei ist, auf Trillian, einen flüchtigen Bekannten Arthurs, und natürlich auf Marvin, den manisch-depressiven Roboter, der sogar Raumschiffe in den Selbstmord treibt.
Urteil: Auch wenn sich die Zusammenfassung nicht so anhört -- wer sich mal für einige Stunden zurücklehnen und amüsieren will, ist hier genau richtig. Selbst wenn der Humor nicht sonderlich subtil ist, macht es Spaß, Adams' Charakteren bei ihren ziemlich unwahrscheinlichen und abstrusen Abenteuern zu folgen. Wer außerdem noch gerne die Antwort auf die Frage aller Fragen erfahren und philosophische Klassiker à los angeles "Die Bewußtwerdung eines Wals" nicht verpassen will, sollte ohne zu zögern zugreifen -- der Anhalter gehört zur Allgemeinbildung.
