What is the definition There is not one. The definition depends entirely upon one's theory. And, even then, few theorists attempt the task. For them, the theory itself is the definition. The differing emphases However, there are some underlying issues which may make your enquiry into the nature of personality more organized. One thing to do is to look at where the theorist places most emphasis. What is the model of the person being proposed? For instance, one theory may emphasize a person's social nature; another discuss us in terms of free will versus determinism; another focus on our instinctual nature, or the uniqueness of our nature; and yet another on our similarities to others.
Unfortunately, all this will make for periods of strange, and perhaps uncomfortable reading. Yet, inevitably, a different approach calls for a different lexicon; and, under its influence, many old terms are unhitched from their familiar meanings. To whom are we speaking? In general, we think the reader who takes us seriously will be an adventuresome soul who is not one bit afraid of thinking unorthodox thoughts about people, who dares peer out at the world through the eyes of strangers, who has not invested beyond his means in either ideas or vocabulary, and who is looking for an ad interim, rather than an ultimate, set of psychological insights (Kelly, 1955).
