Certainly, the physical elements of verbal phenomena can be analysed in physical science, as is the case in acoustic phonetics, for instance, and the physiological conditions necessary for the production and perception of linguistic signs are describable in the respective parts of physiology. But any such investigation-whatever its significance to linguistic science in general-has no bearing upon the problem in question.
