They are violated by the stanza's last line, but it would be wrong to deny that an element of comedy is also present, the comedy of cartoon violence. In stanza VIII Anarchy is introduced: Last came Anarchy·: he rode On a white horse, splashed with blood; He was pale even to the lips, Like Death in the Apocalypse. (30-3) Much of the stanza's force derives from one word 'splashed'. Its effectiveness becomes clear if it is replaced by a more literary word like 'stained'. 'Splashed' is a word more appropriate to the balladeer, but Shelley exploits both its obscenity, its suggestion that blood is of no more significance than whitewash, and also its grotesque comedy.

During the eighteenth century the notion that a word relied for its meaning on its user's knowledge of its defmition became difficult to maintain. The philosophers interested in the origin of language encountered the problem that considerable metaphysical sophistication is necessary to define the relation expresse-d by a preposition like 'of'. It became difficult to believe that a knowledge ofits defmition must have preceded the development and the use of the word; difficult also to believe that all those who used the word appropriately could, if challenged, defme it.
The poem cannot embody the poet's conceptions, its success is simply a product ofits efficiency as a conductor.
