They are violated by the stanza's last line, but it would be wrong to deny that an element of comedy is also present, the comedy of cartoon violence. In stanza VIII Anarchy is introduced: Last came Anarchy·: he rode On a white horse, splashed with blood; He was pale even to the lips, Like Death in the Apocalypse. (30-3) Much of the stanza's force derives from one word 'splashed'. Its effectiveness becomes clear if it is replaced by a more literary word like 'stained'. 'Splashed' is a word more appropriate to the balladeer, but Shelley exploits both its obscenity, its suggestion that blood is of no more significance than whitewash, and also its grotesque comedy.
