By 8 July, Kleist succeeded in penetrating the Stalin Line in the area of Berdichev, and the 13th Panzer, with the Leibstandarte in its wake beating off Soviet counterattacks on the northern flank, advanced on Zhitomir. The last major town before Kiev, Zhitomir fell to the 13th Panzer on 10 July. Reinforced by the 14th and 25th Panzer Divisions the next day, it then drove on to reach the River Irpen within ten miles of Kiev. By 17 July, Kleist’s armor was in front of Kiev, with the Leibstandarte having suffered 683 casualties in three weeks of fighting.

Yet as large motorized divisions within a spearhead that included only nineteen panzer and twelve motorized divisions, they constituted an important element of German striking power. Compared to the fighting these divisions had experienced before, however, war on the Eastern Front presented them with nightmarish challenges that fanatical will alone could not overcome. While spectacular advances outdistancing those of 1917 were made on the central and southern thrusts, the experience of the Totenkopf on the northern thrust told another story.

At Christmas 1941, for example, the Waffen SS received winter parkas before the army. From 1942, expansion plans also called for equipping Waffen SS divisions with the finest and most recent heavy weapons. Over army objections, Hitler insisted on equipping them with Mark IV tanks, at first in battalion strength and later in regiment strength of two battalions, one eventually with Panther tanks. In November 1942, they even received Tigers that had just entered service in September. With one panzer and two panzergrenadier regiments, Waffen SS divisions were also bigger than ordinary German army divisions.
