Hoping for a more settled environment, the Fitzgeralds returned to America in December 1926. Deep in debt, Scott accepted a $3,500 advance to write a flapper comedy entitled Lipstick, but Hollywood rejected his perfunctory script.

What links these seemingly opposing motifs is the era’s anxiety over consumer detachment: whatever freedoms it provided, the automobile contributed to the technological routinization of life, which in turn encouraged and excused the ethical callousness that Jordan embodies when she lies about leaving the top of a borrowed car down in the rain or when she passes “so close to some workman that [her] fender flicked a button on one man’s coat” (57–8).
