It is rather a matter of being caught up into Christ's eternal offering to the Father, and of being indwelt by the Spirit, who, from within, draws us in worship into the inner life of God. Similarly, in the body of Christ, we become, by adoption and grace, instruments in the history of divine action, which is not only a matter of God's movement out towards his creation, but a movement back from creation to God. The specifically Christian insight is that this too, the movement from creation to God, takes place in God, through the humanity of Christ, and derivatively through ourselves, as we are united with Christ, alike in worship and work.
On the other hand we believe that this mysterious and ineffable God, out of pure love for mankind, has made himself known to us, in the most direct and comprehensible way possible, by coming amongst us as one of us, and sharing our life, its heights and depths, its joys and sorrows. To believe in God incarnate, then, is to believe that God has chosen this way of making himself known and drawing us to himself. The doctrine involves taking very seriously both the divinity and the humanity ofJesus Christ.
Still less sense (if that is possible) does it make to say that he might have been all of us. The purpose of the Incarnation was to establish a new relation between ourselves and God. But the Incarnation is not itself a relation between God and man. It includes that, admittedly, and Jesus' relation to the Father is the model for all divine-human relations. But the main point of the Incarnation is not a matter of relation at all. It is a matter of identity. Jesus is God incarnate - for our sake and our salvation.
