The tsunami had displaced an estimated 5 million people from Indonesia to Africa. They had no place to live, no belongings, and no means of livelihood. In Akkarapettai, India, fisherman Raja Krishnamurthy sadly surveyed his wrecked fishing craft, which had been uninsured. “This is the first boat I owned in my life. The boat was my pride,” he told the Washington Post. ” Water was scarce in places, the inrushing saltwater having contaminated most sources of supply. Food in freezers and refrigerators lasted only a day at most with electric power out.
There were no facilities for refrigerating the bodies. They were decomposing under the heat of the Sun and had to be buried as soon as possible. Soldiers quickly ran out of body bags and used black plastic sheeting to wrap corpses before loading them onto trucks, 30 at a time. Outside Banda Aceh, construction equipment gouged out large trenches in the muddy soil. As the trucks arrived, other soldiers stacked the bodies in the trenches, ready to be covered with earth shoved by bulldozers. One such mass grave near the Banda Aceh airport held an estimated 6,000 bodies.
All in all,” Hazil said, “we’ve lost 200 relatives. One day I will be strong enough to return to see what’s left but my wife says she’ll never go back. ’” The tsunami had torn families apart.
