Lawrence's myth-making could hardly go further. Again, his father is not presented as an individual; he is a symbol of the careless and independent male. Lawrence is using his family to help him construct one of those dualisms which had been the pattern of his thinking since at least 1914; and, this time, his father is unequivocally the symbol of old England itself: an old England suffering the 'disaster' of change. Lawrence is quite unconcerned with the feelings he himself had experienced about his parents.

If Sons and Lovers investigates emotional damage, loveless marriage and an upbringing distorted by love and hate, then it is true that identical problems had already appeared, much more naively and in some ways more revealingly, in The White Peacock. The latter is in no sense a conventionally autobiographical novel, but there are ways in which it is as revealing as any of Lawrence's autobiographical writings about his deepest early concerns. One of Lawrence's greatest achievements as a writer is in continually making articulate what in most people is never known, let alone admitted.
