There is little written about the military strategy process, so it was deemed necessary to go into greater detail in this area, whereas the business theory is more highly developed, so these cases could be briefer. The rationale for this choice of method has been debated in academic circles. Eisenhardt (1989a) describes the cases study as ‘a research strategy that focuses on understanding the dynamics present within single settings’. The superiority of the case study strategy in this situation relates to the importance in this research of qualitative, as opposed to quantitative, research methods.
Handling the evidence The approach in this study has been, first, to analyse the existing theories of strategy formulation process in order to expose differences of opinion. Case studies from the military and business fields were written from secondary and primary sources to exemplify the processes in action. Although the accounts of what happened were recorded as objectively as possible, the cases were written with this study in mind, and to that extent were biased towards the research questions.
