As a model in its own right, it tends to remain a little vague and as such could be viewed at either end of a profession’s structure, that is its philosophy or its practical application (as noted in 1 and 2 in the preceding text). Model of Adaptive Skills (Anne Cronin Mosey 1986) Mosey’s model of adaptive skills is based on the belief that humans are continually adapting their actions and behaviours to the environment in which they find themselves.

As Duncan (2006) says: ‘it is important to remain mindful that specific terms are still being used by different people in different ways’ (p. 61). For example, the occupational therapy reference dictionary offers a confusing picture of synonymous definitions by referring to a paradigm as: ‘an organising interaction. A pattern, example or model’ (Jacobs and Jacobs 2009, p. 182) and a model as: ‘An approach, a framework or structure that organises knowledge’ (Jacobs and Jacobs 2009, p. 152). In order to clarify the stance of this book, I offer here my view of both the definitions of the terms and the relationship or interaction between the concepts they represent, which in my experience works in practice.
