Knowing that American fighter units in Britain had little, if any, combat experi- " ence, he wanted to do some operational flying in a seasoned unit before rejoining his own service. He eventually flew eleven operational sorties during January-February 1943 with 315 Sqn. During spring 1943 combat commitments of the Squadron grew further, with twelve operations in March, eighteen in April, and twenty-one in May. During these months some success was achieved (a total of 3-1-11 credited), but for the loss of five pilots killed, two in captivity, and one missing in France (eventually returning to Britain in May).
