O’Connor took victory quietly, without demonstration, without memorable historical asides. There was the question of 4th Indian Division. There was above all the question of whether Western Desert Force, about to be halved in size, should now fall back on Matruh according to the original intention. This was the safest thing to do. The magazines, stocked only for a five-day battle, were partly exhausted; it was difficult to see how both to replenish them and move the army with available trucks. The remaining Italian forces were very strong in numbers, many of them fresh formations.
