I wish to get the Concord, the Massachusetts, the America, out of my head and be sane a part of every day.... I wish to forget ... all mean, narrow, trivial men (and this requires usually to forego and forget all personal relations so long).... ) The gregariousness of men is their most contemptible and discouraging aspect.
A Week on the Concord and Merrimac Rivers can furnish a classic example. Thoreau's remark to his mother that "Seeing so many people from day to day, one comes to have less respect for flesh and bones" bears a strong resemblance to the conclusion of the October Fair passage in the Week's last chapter. Here the emotion expressed at first is enjoyment. " Thoreau has an appreciative eye for "the inspired negro" singer, and even for "the supple vagabond," who "empties both his pockets and his character into the stream....
