CD ROM encyclopaedias, for example, can offer large quantities of data available in accessible formats. The navigation structure of some CD ROMs matches the navigation of a book, but the addition of images and the wealth of easily searched data are highly motivational for children. In the following Teaching example aYear 2 teacher used a Dorling Kindersley music CD ROM. This particular CD enabled children to research and investigate a range of musical instruments, they could locate information regarding the instruments’ country of origin, musical family, the material they were made from and even hear the sounds they produced.
While the children waited anxiously for the final results they prepared the next stage of their muginsulation designs. Under the teacher’s guidance the children came to realise that measuring and recording temperatures ‘by hand’ over the course of an hour would have been tedious and impractical; it would also have introduced a range of possible errors. The automatic sensing equipment detected the temperature faithfully and automatically every two minutes. The data-logging software produce a range of line graphs which made the results clear.
The first and third points were highly relevant for this Teaching example. However, with data-handling processes the second point takes on much greater importance. The fact that children can use realistic numbers, whether for population, currency or distances to planets, makes the investigations more meaningful, and the use of ICT means that the more complex mathematical computations do not intrude on the creative thinking.
