Es ist leichter, an althergebrachten Vorstellungen festzuhalten, als neue Ideen zu akzeptieren. Hjalmar Tallqvist, Professor der Physik an der Universit¨at Helsinki, ver¨offentlichte 1928 das popul¨ arwissenschaftliche Buch Der neue Aufstieg der Physik, in dem er außer den Kathodenstrahlen, Atomen, R¨ontgenstrahlen, Nordlich¨ tern und Zodiakallichtern auch die Athertheorie vorstellte.

Die Aufgabe der deutschen Staatsb¨ urgerschaft hatte einen sehr praktischen Grund, n¨amlich den Wunsch, dem Milit¨ardienst zu entgehen. Er unterzog sich der Aufnahmepr¨ ufung am Eidgen¨ ossischen Polytechnikum in Z¨ urich, der sp¨ateren Eidgen¨ ossischen Technischen Hochschule (ETH), denn dort konnte in Sonderf¨allen ein Studium auch ohne Abitur aufgenommen werden. Einstein erhielt eine Ausnahmegenehmigung, als Minderj¨ahriger an den Aufnahmepr¨ ufungen teilzunehmen, aber er flog aufgrund schlechten Allgemeinwissens und wegen unzul¨ anglicher Franz¨ osischkenntnisse durch.
