By Stafford Beer (auth.), Robert Trappl (eds.)

The "world" is turning into progressively more intractable. we've got discovered to determine "systems" in it, now we have built a hugely subtle math ematical gear to "model'" them, huge laptop simulation courses deal with millions of equations with zillions of parameters. yet how ade quate are those efforts? half one in every of this quantity is a dialogue containing a few proposals for taking away the limitations we come upon whilst coming near near advanced platforms with our versions: Is it attainable, in any respect, to layout a political or econom ic approach with out contemplating killing, torture, and oppression? will we correctly version the current situation whereas ignoring their frequently symbolic and paradoxical nature? Is it attainable to provide an explanation for teleological options corresponding to "means" and "ends" when it comes to primarily seventeenth century Newtonian mechanics? do we rather make applicable use of the big a mount of structures techniques with no exploring their family, with no de veloping a "system of platforms concepts"? And why do greater than ninety five% of all process modelling efforts result in only a heap of published paper, and not anything else? best scientists from diverse disciplines, who've diversified viewpoints and use very diversified types in providing their message have been invited to offer their techniques to those and to different difficulties of equivalent significance: both as Plenary Lectures on the 7th eu assembly on Cybernetics and platforms study on the college of Vienna, Austria, (Professors Stafford Beer, Helga Nowotny, and Robert Rosen (Ross Ashby Memorial Lecture)) or as Invited Lectures to the Austrian Society

Nowotny: It is certainly true that this observation has been made before, but I am sorry that I also have to disappoint you - and I do not have the answer. And I don't think that anyone has the answer. We are only discovering now that it seems to be. much more difficult to make progress in the social domain as compared to the technological domain, because we do not have the same extent of control in the social domain. While it is easy to be overly impressed by the scientific and technological forecasts that have been realized and have actually provided the islands with plenty and wishfulfilment, at least for that part of humanity that lives in the 26 rich industrialized nations, its dark side has also come to stay with us.
